Abstract

The rapid emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools in the legal sector has significantly transformed traditional legal interpretation across global jurisdictions. In India, where legal interpretation is deeply rooted in constitutional morality, purposive construction, precedent-based reasoning, and socio-legal context, the integration of AI presents both opportunities and challenges. This paper examines how AI-driven legal tools interact with, support, and sometimes disrupt conventional interpretive functions in India. Through comparative analysis with the United States and European Union, it evaluates the capacity of AI to replicate or supplement human judicial reasoning while addressing concerns of opacity, bias, democratic legitimacy, and accountability. The study proposes a hybrid human-AI interpretive model and recommends regulatory, ethical, and pedagogical strategies for responsible integration of AI in legal interpretation.
